for the fiscal cliff is just one week away. they are waiting for a small patch rather than a large fix. president barack obama is on vacation and so is house speaker john boehner and there is no agreement and if we go over the cliff, most americans will see higher taxes. >>> a police woman shot and killed an american security adviser. it happened inside the heavily guarded area. the shooting appears to be an insider attack and authorities say this is the first such attack by a woman and was arrested by afghan police. >>> they are dealing with the rising number of homicides and one city now is also known for its violence. police say 18 people have been killed so far which is down from 43 years ago. the city declared a state of emergency after a deadly summer in 2005. >>> they plan on conduct being several checkpoints from hours from now. they canceled one in fremont and drunk driving is made worse when there are heavy rains like the ones we had over the weekend. they were just three from the same timeframe when skies are clear. >>> roads have been pretty clear and we are just getting a new report

as negotiations continue over the fiscal cliff. host: our series on the fiscal cliff continues this morning with a dive into social security. here to talk about the program and how it is involved in the discussions and the negotiations over america's financial future, is stephen ohlemacher, joining us from the associated press, where he is a reporter. thank you for being here. guest: thank you. host: how many people in america receive social security? guest: a little bit more than 56 million people get social security. the average benefit is a little over $1,200 a month. so maybe it is like $13,000, $14,000 a year. host: we're talking about retirees but also the disabled. guest: yes, fairly wide group of people get social security benefits, retired workers, spouses, children, disabled workers, widows, widowers. it is a fairly big social safety net of people who get social security benefits. host: as you mentioned about 56 million the retirees received a $1,2 a month. there is also the s.s.i. about $500 a month. how does social security get financed? guest: it has been a self funded program.

is reacting already to this. in fact, i was raiding a report this morning that the fiscal cliff has hit for many businesses because they're having to finalize their payrolls for 2013. what are you hearing to the leaders that you're talking to? >> i call it a curve and i think it's not as big a deal as a lot of other people think because ultimately something is going to happen. and what should happen is no plan b. for plan b to go is crazy. and they should go for the big plan or no plan whatsoever because what's going to happen is taxes will go up and then all of these republicans that signed the so-called pledge are going to be able to reduce taxes, and therefore, they haven't violated their pledge because they'll be reducing taxes. not increasing them. a deal will be made. but it's got to be the right deal. regardless of cliff or curve, it's got to be the right deal. we have to get this country back on track. and it is just so incredible what is taking place. i've been watching this and you've been watching it and been reporting on it very well for years. this isn't just something that

to be able to deal with the fiscal cliff. the next congress, unless they reform senate filibuster rules and also -- and you can tell me whether this is a dream come true -- what if nancy pelosi and john boehner kind of got together and nancy pelosi told boehner he could bring the votes for his speakership and then maybe together could isolate the tea party section of his group and take away some of the radical left of her group and bring the moderates together, support him for speakership. me, being a democrat, i would not get everything i want, but the republicans would get everything they wanted. by the time re-election came up they would have seen there was a lot of progress made and maybe they could not run primaries on those guys that decided to run to the middle with policy they laid out together. host: thank you for the call. guest: so many things. basically, you are assuming that john boehner would be elected speaker in a democratic house. it is not likely that they would give him their votes. it is far more likely, quite honestly, that the democrats would like to see continued

on the markets. futures are down a little bit. a lot of concerns about the fiscal cliff. we mentioned earlier, also concerns about this potential strike that could affect ports all over the northeast and in the gulf as well. so you've got ports in houston, got ports in newark, a lot of commodities moving in and out and this could be a lousy way to start the new year. as we do hear the opening.
